Scale Flowers Instructions

These flowers can be tricky to make, finding just the right combo of ring sizes is harder than you'd think.

I tried variations with rings in our stash and ended up happiest with a six petal flower made with five different kinds of rings. Even using the exact same rings, I discovered that even the variations between the different color petals made a difference. Some colors lay almost flat, while others were so tight they were difficult to close the final ring.

This was also evident when I played around with different anodized color rings or switched from one set of rings to another.

If you are making flowers just for yourself - friends and family, getting the Ring Lord kit may be the safest way to make sure the flowers go together easily. I haven't tried it, but am sure they are fastidious about sets of rings that will work together.

Six Petal Flowers

Six Petal Scale Maille Flowers from Sieur Godefroy's Workshop
  6 small anodized scale petals
6 16 gauge 1/4 inch, gold anodized rings
  6 18 gauge 1/4 inch, bronze rings
  6 19 gauge 5/32 stainless? rings
12 18 gauge 3/8 inch, gold anodized rings
1 16 gauge 5/16 inch , gold anodized ring for center

Pre-open all rings. Each flower takes about 10 minutes to make.

  1. Close 5/16 inch ring
  2. Attach all scales to the 5/16 inch ring with two 3/16th rings making sure all the scales are facing the same direction.
  3. Take 16 g 1/4" ring and pass it through two rings, one from each of two scales side by side.
  4. Continue around the flower until all are done. The six rings will lay flat against the petals.
  5. Flip flower over, repeat with 6 bronze rings connecting petals. Only go through rings, do not go through scale.
  6. Put the 5/32 ring between each petal, connecting top and bottom 1/4 inch rings. Watch carefully that the 1/4 inch rings are properly positioned. They have a tendency to flip over.

Five Petal Flower

The Ring Lord Flower pattern shows this weave takes 3 ring sizes. They sell instructions online.

Somewhere on their site states that the ring sizes for small scales are:

 16g 1/4''
 18g 3/16''
 19g 5/32''

  • These were too tight when I tried it. It did work well with a 16 ga 1/4 inch rubber ring in the center.
  • Thinner scales like sterling and titanium use ring above, but substitute 19g 9/64 instead of 19g 5/32.
  • With large scales the rings are 14g 3/8, 16g 1/4 and 16g 3/16 or 16g 7/32.
